The port served as a significant extraction point and staging ground for the Iloilo and Negros haciendas, highlighting the historical impact of colonial practices. A British figure, who improved the sugarcane plantations and expanded the hacienda system, provided loans to businessmen and landowners seeking to grow their sugar plantation enterprises. This entanglement of technology and governance regarding land has resulted in a neo-feudal system that continues to affect labor practices today.

Organizing efforts with an upland community through Dulungan Youth and Ekopraxis revealed the harsh realities faced by seasonal laborers in the Negros haciendas. Many men work for five months, earning only 20,000 pesos for their labor, while the sugar produced is transported via boats and rafts to the port in Iloilo. This exploitation has contributed to the wealth of prominent families who maintain significant political control in the Philippines. The performance coincided with one of the largest protests in recent years, addressing corruption in flood control infrastructure, where participants dressed in white, further connecting the themes of labor, exploitation, and the historical narrative surrounding the sugarcane industry.

This work is an offshoot of an ongoing research project on commodity histories in the Philippines, particularly sugar, hemp, and rice. In this piece on rivers and on doing dirty laundry out in public, I dive into it from my experiences as both as someone who works with land and someone coming from a working-class background.
